I’ve just got back from a fantastic lazy Sunday morning breakfast at my local cafe. There are plenty of cafes where I live. Plenty of choice for any hungry consumer on a sunny Sunday morning.

Show Up and Throw Up

It never ceases to amaze me the number of professional salespeople that simply talk non-stop at a prospect. What ever happened to the art of listening?

How effective is it to arrive at a first meeting and simply blurt out everything you can? Is this a sign of poor preparation, or even worse a sign that you actually have nothing of value to say?

Does the customer really need to know every detail of your business? Your revenue from last year? Your number of employees? Do they really care? I doubt it.

Going armed with questions nobody else is asking, coupled with valid insight on their industry and a welcoming ear? Now there’s an idea

What’s Required, not Desired

It strikes me that many companies today are all about doing the minimum possible to please their customers. There is a sense that if you can get away with what’s required, then this is good enough.

How long can this last?

The Internet has changed everything. Every person and every company is now more visible than ever before. Big brands need to be just as aware as small brands.

New Horizons

So, I’ve decided to write a blog. I’ve chosen to kick things off on the day that I’ve sold my shares in the technology company I founded.

It’s an interesting position. Since announcing the news, I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of consulting offers I’ve been presented with, however there is a slight feeling of sadness of moving on from something that I’ve lived and breathed for the past six years. I’ve had some amazing experiences and made many lifelong friends along the way. The aim of this blog is to share some stories and lessons learnt in building a business from nothing into a globally recognised brand, teamed with leading technology powerhouses such as IBM.
